Future of Renewable energy and power in UAE and Umar Farooq’s take on it.
Sustainability today is transformed by a practice that
captures the imagination of the world, particularly Dubai, which now offers
those entrepreneurs who want to create a healthier, stronger and more
meaningful world a mine of start-up opportunities. The pursuit of Dubai's
sustainable development took a big step forward when the UAE Vice President and
prime minister and ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, unveiled an energy strategy for 2050 in 2015, which is a plan to
transform Dubai into a global center for renewable energies and a green
economy.
Green energy enthusiast and one of the businessman and
philanthropist of UAE and Dubai Umar Farooq said that the aim is to create
sustainable industries irrespective of non-renewable energy sources.
Furthermore, Etihad Energy Services Company has been
established by DEWA, which offers promising investment opportunities to energy efficient
companies
It is also working to refurbish 30,000 homes and the energy
usage is projected to decrease by 30 % by 2030. The DEWA record was 88. 8 per
cent in 2017, compared to the global average of 62 per cent in the
Sustainability Culture Indicator.
Umar Farooq states that the Dubai 2050 Energy Strategy
supports five key pillars: infrastructure, legislation, funding, capacity and
skills building and environmental mixing. "The 5th pillar aims at
developing an environmentally sustainable combination of solar (25%), nuclear
(7%), renewable coal (7%) and gas (61%) by 2030. In 2050, the combination would
slowly increase the usage of renewable energy sources to 75%. Dubai is now the
leading carbon footprint city in the world.
The fact that Dubai is developing and fostering a green
economy is also evident in the UAE's widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EV).
Due to low interest loans, free charges at government billing stations,
discounts on vehicle registration fees and exemptions from highway tolls and
little to no import duties, EVs are now coming to this country. DEWA has
recently increased from 100 to 200 the number of Dubai charging stations.
Umar Farooq Zahoor says that the next Expo 2020 may be
Dubai's most promising message of sustainability for the world, because at the
BIE it is committed to delivering one of the world's most sustainable exhibitions
in history.
In 2015 Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice
President and Prime Minister, and ruler of Dubai unveiled
the Dubai Energy startup 2050. Nevertheless, making Dubai a base for
testing and applying next generation clean energy technology to create a global
model that can help the world is still important to him. The foreign
corporations and the centres of research and development. And this is a strong
case for Dubai’s sustainability initiative supporters.
